Julie was born
and grew up in England where she graduated from Leeds University with a
BA in Textile Design. She worked in London for several years as a
designer and colourist, before moving to a small island in the Caribbean
with her husband. There she found another outlet for her creativity and
began painting seascapes in oil pastel, inspired by the tropical waters.
A move to Vancouver Island, Canada in 2002 brought fresh inspiration
and an exploration of new mediums. Julie now works in acrylics and
watercolours, often building up layers of texture and transparent colour
to achieve the desired effect.

These paintings relate directly to my exploration of the natural world.
My fascination extends beyond what is visible, to the unseen formations
beneath the earth's surface - layers of intricate pattern and decay,
feeding the recognized beauty above ground.
Roads and pathways intrigue; much more than a compositional device
drawing us into the picture, they facilitate the journey beyond the
canvas and into our imagination.
I love the dramatic contrasts of intense light and long, deep shadows
as the days begin and end; the rich colour palette is a spontaneous
response to these glowing scenes.
